The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation provides a range of services and family support throughout Western Australia to enable children and adults with specific learning disabilities to realise their greatest potential.
Core purpose
To become the Centre of Excellence for information sharing, identification education and ongoing support for children and adults with dyslexia, their families, those who teach and the wider community.
Who is helped by the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation?
5% of the population - children and adults with a specific learning disability (SLD, SPELD). That is 1 in 20 or, on average, at least one child in every classroom.
Although of average or above average intelligence, those people with a significant and permanent disability in one area of learning.
The most common SLD is dyslexia - a difficulty in reading and spelling.
The learning disability often creates a number of social and emotional problems associated with frustration, low self esteem and a sense of failure.
